P&O Cruises' Pacific Pearl shows her patriotic side during Australia Day celebrations
in Sydney Harbour on January 26, 2013, by wearing giant banners (one on each side)
displaying our famous sporting cry: "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie". The custom-made banners
were the biggest ever unfurled on the harbour and each measured 100 metres long
by 6 metres high, weighing in at more than 110 kilograms (each). Combined, the banners took
almost 200 hours to print and 160 hours to sew. The Pacific Pearl also donned several
other Australian flags for the duration of the day with two, measuring 14m by 7m, on
her funnel and a third 12m by 6m flag splashed under the bridge.

The Pacific Sun is farewelled as it cruises down the Brisbane River on her last cruise
as a P&O ship, July 1, 2012. She has been sold to what is believed to be a Chinese
company which is likely to launch new cruises out of China towards the end of 2012.
P&O's Pacific Dawn sits in the Cairncross dry dock in Brisbane, located directly opposite the
Portside cruise terminal she calls home, undergoing a major refurbishment.
What's with the composite, you ask? Home late from work after walking
around the city for an hour doing 'stuff' meant I was faced with the
prospect of peak hour traffic getting to the other side of the river to photograph
the Regatta in her entirety (and peak hour getting back).
To give some idea of perspective, the two portholes in the bottom
photo are the end two portholes in the top photo.

A refuelling ship sits alongside the Celebrity Century as it's docked at Fisherman Islands, Brisbane.
Okay, I've cheated a bit here but I'd already covered around 70km driving all over Brisbane
doing this and that and, to get a full length shot of the Black Watch docked at Portside, it would have
meant driving another 30km or so getting to the other side of the Brisbane River.
Instead, I've cheated a little and have done this composite. And, so you know, the little
yellow speedboat at the front of each photo is the same boat.
The Queen Elizabeth completely hides the wharf at Fisherman Islands, Brisbane.
She left Southampton, UK, on Jan 4 and is due back on April 12.

It's not one of my photos but it was too good to pass up on...the Pacific Sun sits in Sydney Harbour on Australia Day with a huge Australian flag hanging on its port side. An exact same flag was unfurled on the ship's starboard side, too. Both flags measured 44 x 22 metres and weighed over 100kgs each!

Making my way to the usual (and only) place where you can photograph cruise ships
at Brisbane's Fisherman Islands, I saw the Seven Seas Voyager through the trees.
I do try and get all, or the majority, of each ship (in this case, the Spirit of Adventure) into
in Brisbane (and there is a 'full' shot of the Spirit of Adventure further into this gallery).
As a result, I've opted for this close-up so you can see the ship in the distance.
That's the Paul Gauguin in dry-dock getting a $7 million re-fit.
