Mangroves, storm clouds, mosquitoes, fading light...the wait to photograph Rhapsody of the Seas
begins at low tide on the mudflats at Nudgee Beach, Brisbane.

P&O Cruises' Pacific Pearl shows her patriotic side during Australia Day celebrations
in Sydney Harbour on January 26, 2013, by wearing giant banners (one on each side)
displaying our famous sporting cry: "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie". The custom-made banners
were the biggest ever unfurled on the harbour and each measured 100 metres long
by 6 metres high, weighing in at more than 110 kilograms (each). Combined, the banners took
almost 200 hours to print and 160 hours to sew. The Pacific Pearl also donned several
other Australian flags for the duration of the day with two, measuring 14m by 7m, on
her funnel and a third 12m by 6m flag splashed under the bridge.

The Crystal Symphony cruises down the Brisbane River at sunset minutes after leaving Portside.
Several 'cruise nerds' (I belong to that tribe!) check out Celebrity Solstice as she is docked at
Fisherman Islands, Brisbane, in December 2012. I cruised on her in March, 2013, and you
can read about my cruise HERE.
Voyager of the Seas docked at Laemchabang, Thailand, October 2012, during my cruise from
Singapore to Fremantle, Western Australia. Read about my cruise HERE.
The Pacific Sun is farewelled as it cruises down the Brisbane River on her last cruise
as a P&O ship, July 1, 2012. She has been sold to what is believed to be a Chinese
company which is likely to launch new cruises out of China towards the end of 2012.
P&O's Pacific Dawn sits in the Cairncross dry dock in Brisbane, located directly opposite the
Portside cruise terminal she calls home, undergoing a major refurbishment.
What's with the composite, you ask? Home late from work after walking
around the city for an hour doing 'stuff' meant I was faced with the
prospect of peak hour traffic getting to the other side of the river to photograph
the Regatta in her entirety (and peak hour getting back).
To give some idea of perspective, the two portholes in the bottom
photo are the end two portholes in the top photo.
A wharf crane sits next to where the Arcadia is docked at Fisherman Islands, Brisbane.

If you like the photography in my blogs, it's because I am a professional photographer. My photos don't merely show something, they tell a story. And visual stories i.e. photos, are more interesting than pictures that merely show something.
If you'd like to know how to turn your images into visual stories, I've published a book that takes a whole new slant on photography and 'translates' the art of taking photos into a language we all understand.
To read more about my book and see some of its 100+ visual examples, please click HERE.
***I use all the tips and hints from my book in every photo I take, including those in Travel With Giulio.

A refuelling ship sits alongside the Celebrity Century as it's docked at Fisherman Islands, Brisbane.
Okay, I've cheated a bit here but I'd already covered around 70km driving all over Brisbane
doing this and that and, to get a full length shot of the Black Watch docked at Portside, it would have
meant driving another 30km or so getting to the other side of the Brisbane River.
Instead, I've cheated a little and have done this composite. And, so you know, the little
yellow speedboat at the front of each photo is the same boat.
The Queen Elizabeth completely hides the wharf at Fisherman Islands, Brisbane.
She left Southampton, UK, on Jan 4 and is due back on April 12.

The Pacific Dawn docked at Noumea, New Caledonia.
It's not one of my photos but it was too good to pass up on...the Pacific Sun sits in Sydney Harbour on Australia Day with a huge Australian flag hanging on its port side. An exact same flag was unfurled on the ship's starboard side, too. Both flags measured 44 x 22 metres and weighed over 100kgs each!

The C. Columbus, speed stripe and all, docked at Portside on Australia Day, 2012.
Making my way to the usual (and only) place where you can photograph cruise ships
at Brisbane's Fisherman Islands, I saw the Seven Seas Voyager through the trees.
I do try and get all, or the majority, of each ship (in this case, the Spirit of Adventure) into
in Brisbane (and there is a 'full' shot of the Spirit of Adventure further into this gallery).
As a result, I've opted for this close-up so you can see the ship in the distance.
That's the Paul Gauguin in dry-dock getting a $7 million re-fit.
Lurking in the Cairncross dry-dock in Brisbane...the Paul Gauguin - in there for a $7 million refit.
I wonder where Santa parked his sleigh? MS Zaandam docked at Portside in

I'll bet they wish they were on board - the Pacific Dawn heads down the Brisbane River and out to sea.

Waiting for the fun to begin! The Pacific Dawn docked at Portside, Brisbane, with minutes to go before
setting sail on its 10-night 'Christmas cruise' (is that a last minute passenger racing to get on board?).
